About the Program

An innovative health improvement initiative designed to improve the lives of children and their families through their communities and schools.

Balance It Out: ArkansasSM Good Choices for a Healthier You SM is a health improvement initiative sponsored by the Arkansas Department of Health & Human Services and Pfizer Health Solutions Inc, the care management subsidiary of Pfizer. Beginning in January, 2007, Balance It Out: Arkansas is a 3-year pilot program. There is no cost associated with participation in the program.

The program is designed to improve the lives of children and their families through their communities and schools by addressing diet, a sedentary lifestyle, and risk factors for developing chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.

The program will be implemented in 3 school districts in Arkansas - Dollarway (Pine Bluff), Harrison, and Paragould - and teach participants to embrace healthier food choices and a more active lifestyle.

The Balance It Out: Arkansas program will help continue the work that was initiated during the former Governor's administration with the "Healthy Arkansas" campaign and the implementation of Act 1220.

Unlike other school-based health education programs, Balance It Out: Arkansas incorporates community-based care teams of Community Health Workers and school nurses to help students and their families. This program extends beyond the students and schools by helping families and communities to:

  • Better understand their health status and the health risks of being overweight
  • Improve their ability to adopt positive lifestyle behaviors
  • Make small, lasting changes to their eating habits
  • Encourage these same behaviors within their homes among the rest of the family
